Christmas with the Award Winning School Choir

The night of Sunday, December 6 would not be easily forgotten. It was a one-of-a-kind concert led by the MUSON Diploma School Choir.
The Muson School Diploma Choir was established in 2006 when the Muson Diploma programme started under MTN Foundation Scholarship. All students taking the Diploma course are required to
take choir as a course of study for the two years they are in MUSON Music School. The choir has been under the direction of Sir Emeka Nwokedi and performs regularly in MUSON and other events:

· Appreciation Concert for MTN and other Sponsors
· Graduation Concert
· Other MTN events outside MUSON
· MUSON Concerts, MUSON Festivals and Christmas Concerts.

In March 2011, the Choir had a joint concert with the brass ensemble of the La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra to celebrate the 150th anniversary of unity of Italy. In October of the same year, the Choir had another joint concert with Bel canto Ensemble from Italy to celebrate the World Week of Italian language. In March 2012, the Choir performed with the Quintetto Dell’ Opera Di Milano in a Gala Concert to celebrate 45 years of Saipem in Nigeria. Their outstanding performance earned them a special award of appreciation from Saipem and Consulate General of Italy.

The MUSON Diploma Choir had a two-time performance tour of China in 2010. First to perform at the 29th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education and second at the invitation of the Nigerian Embassy in China to perform at a Gala Concert to celebrate Nigeria’s 50th Independence Anniversary in Beijing, China.

In 2014, Muson Diploma Choir participated in the 7th International Choir Festival and Competition (Isola Del Sole) in Grado, Italy. It contested in two categories of the competition – Folklore and Youth Choir of Mixed Voices and won a Gold medal in the Youth Choir of Mixed voices category and a Silver Medal in the Folklore category.

The Choir under the direction of Sir Emeka Nwokedi, recently (June 2015), got an outstanding result – Distinction in the Advanced Choral Music Examination conducted by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM, London). After the choir’s performance, the examiner in emotional expression said, “I have not felt this touched in a long time”. He promised facilitating the choir’s invitation to England and has since sent a link to that effect.

Recently the choir passed a performance audition for ISME World Conference and consequently, has been invited to perform at the 32nd World Conference of the International Society for Music Education, (ISME) which comes up in Glasgow, Scotland from 24th to 29th July, 2016. We look forward with great enthusiasm to another international outing in 2016.
